I have a 1998 A160 that has covered 19,000 miles.  Recently it has developed a continous drone from the transmission when under load (Accelerating) in all gears.  At first I thought it maybe a wheel bearing but as soon as I engage the clutch the drone goes away.  It sounds like a bearing in the gearbox.

The car is five months outside it's warranty but I certainly wouldn't expect this type of problem after only 19k.

Has anyone else experienced this type of issue?

I have contacted my Mercedes dealer who has requested I take it in for them to take a look - Has anyone had any experience of Mercedes customer service with this type of major component failure after such a low mileage bearing in mind it's now out of warranty...?

Thanks,
John.

A160 - Noisy Gearbox

I have a 2000 A190 manual , Just had a new clutch @ 20k miles (slip&squeal when reversing), and recently a new gearbox@24k, My gearbox was really noisy and the gear lever rattled in 3rd gear when accelerating. Many visits to the M/b dealer I might add. but world of difference with a new box. much smoother & quieter.  Under warranty as well, I did complain many times though.

I have a 190 also.
In 3rd gear you can feel through the gear lever a very slight vibration which is not there in other gears.
It is not noisy at all though.
How bad was your rattling and how noisy was it?

Thats how mine started, a vibration at first, then the gear lever would rattle when accelerating in 3rd gear, (the gear lever always felt a bit loose in that gear). Come to think about it, when the car was at idle the gearbox was making a rumbling noise.. (well at least compared to the new one which is very quiet.)

Oh , I hope i dont suffer the same fate, sounds like a lot of hassle.
How many miles from the initial vibration to the rattling and noise symptoms?
Thanks,
Iain

Probably been around a year altogether.  (must be around 10K miles I guess

I hope you don't get the same problem..

It's a good job it was & still is under warranty, otherwise I would have sold the car by now, Which is a shame as its great car (my second one) but it has put the quality of Mercedes to shame.

Thanks for your reply.
I will keep my eye on the gearbox and see what happens.
I have about 11 months warranty left so if it gets any worse i will get them to sort it out under warranty.
Which Mercedes dealer did you use for warranty work ?

I have a problem with 1st gear slippage and thumping into second, after that all higher gear changes are smoothe and normal. Fault code 1886 pressent, I can clear the code but as soon as I drive it the code will come up again. Souds expensive, anyone any thoughts on this?? Sorry this should have been a new post!
