Hi guys, first post, right just bought my self a 1999 A170 cdi. From an auction... dont know alot about these cars let alone mercs hopefully you can fill in afew blancs for me.

My first question is ive noticed that hot air blows out from underneath the car from a pipe that sticks out near that cat, what the heck is this? Ive seen a little smoke come out of this pipe too.

I noticed when i switch off the car something still makes a noise for a moment for about 30 secs after engine is switched off then stops, its like some sort of fan is still spinning any one know what this is too?

Hi and welcome to the forum. The exhaust you are referring to is for the auxiliary heater. It helps the engine get up to and maintain a good working temperature as they can otherwise run cool (a by product of excellent efficiency). You can turn it off, there is a switch by the handbrake and if my memory serves me correctly (I sold my 98 A170CDi about 5 years ago) it is switched off when the red light is on?!?! This is the same as the aircon which is also off when the red light is on, confusing isn't it!

The auxiliary heater burns diesel from the main tank so it runs the extractor fan for a while after switching off to clear fumes and cool the unit. This is the noise you can hear after you park up.

Hi
Thank you. Very informative. I thought this auxillary heater was to heat the interior of the car.

Ahhhhh.... is that what that turbine noise is... Thanks for the info... will try to see if I can switch mine off... I find the fumes rather annoying!
