A170 key fob

My W reg A170 has developed the embarrasing habit of refusing to let me in the car !!! I firstly changed the batteries in the key fob and sycronised the key but the car will still open/lock when it feels like it. I have scoured this forum and have come to 2 conclusions
1. I need a new key fob
2. I need a new battery on the car......

Any help on this would be appreciated before I resort to going into the dealers showroom throwing money around ha ha
