Hi forum, I haven't joined a forum in years. I wanted some advice please from drivers of the auto A200d.
I understand the implications of a semi auto gear box as apposed to full automatic, but does anyone have advice as to its failings or what they love about it?
I used to have a Honda Civic with it i-shift semi auto gear box and I just remember how awful it was. The gear changes were jerky, it didn't GO when you wanted to set off quickly. It wouldn't reverse up an incline and you had to rev it so much to reverse uphill it was actually quite dangerous.. not a smooth maneuver at all!
Should I be worried about similar problems on the A class?
Any advice appreciated.

Hi Gaz , sorry, I've no idea about the technical aspects of the gear boxes, I'm just trying to figure out if I'll be making a mistake buying another semi auto car or if they have come a long way since 2013 when I had the awful Civic i-shift.

Fitted with the 7g-DCT (wet clutch) gearbox? If so very good very good in the B class we owned. :)

Hi,

Had no problems with our A200d though that was a MY2016.
Lovely and smooth.
Nice because you could use the paddles, if you forgot to change gear after a while it would just revert back to auto too.
Doesn’t happen on our later V class, that stays in the gear you’ve chosen.

If you leave it in auto you will probably never notice that it's a Dual Clutch automated gearbox rather than the more conventional torque converter auto.

My Daughter has a 68 pate A180d Auto and absolutely no issues with the gearbox at all, in fact there have been no issues at all with the car :)

We are discussing three different types of automatic (or automated) gearboxes here. The Honda i-shift was an automated manual gearbox, that is essentially a manual gearbox but with the clutch operated automatically by a computer controlled actuator. They were generally regarded as awful, for the reasons the OP has highlighted. The second type is a traditional torque converter automatic. The type fitted to the A class is a more recent DCT (dual clutch transmission). In simple (but I hope reasonably accurate) terms this takes a conventional gearbox and splits it in to two halves, each controlled automatically by its own clutch. In effect two gears (say 1 and 2) are simultaneously selected with one driving and the other held disengaged by its clutch. When a shift is (automatically) demanded one clutch opens and the other closes, making for near instant shifts. The DCT tend to be lighter and cheaper to manufacture than a traditional torque converter automatic, and are a little more fuel efficient, or so I understand. They have been problematic for some manufacturers (VAG and Ford) but the Mercedes ones do not seem to have many problems. Having driven both, as others have observed, I would have no concerns about the driveability of the Mercedes DCT. The only slight (I emphasise slight) criticism I would make of the DCT compared to a torque converter automatic is that they can be a little less smooth at parking speeds and sometimes need a few revs to begin to move. But it is a very small difference.

Just while you mention this it is something I have noticed with my 7 DCT which is noticeably different to my previous Audi 7 DSG.
When engaging reverse my CLA will initially sit there for a few seconds before moving slowly if you dont touch the gas, whereas my Audi would instantly move when off the brake which made slow speed manoeuvring a smoother experience.
If I am being honest I would rate the Audi gearbox slightly higher than than the Mercedes because the latter can get caught out by not selecting the correct gear quickly after braking sharply which causes a jerk when trying to get smoothly back on the power.
Like you say though its not a big deal. :)

That is interesting because Matt Watson of Carwow always says that the Audi auto box is ponderous :confused:
