A210 Auto gear box problem - HELP

Just found this site while in a total flux of frustration with my A210.

A bit about me, This is my 4th MB and we have 7 in the immediate family, my wife has a CLK 230K, my brother an E280, by brother in law has an SL500 and a V280, on & on it goes.

My reason for the above is that I consider myself a loyal MB customer and I have never had a real problem with any of my cars until now.

My 4.5 year old A210 has just started making a noise from the automatic gear box and is jumping from 2nd into 3rd gear. The noise happens when you slow down and then try to speed up again, it feels like it is stuck in top gear and the car shudders.

My local dealer is looking at it at the moment but are saying it will proberbly need a gear box at £6000!!! Now this is about all the car is worth!! They have said that MB would not entertain a good will claim at this mileage (56,000).
Any ideas? Or am I just expected to “throw it away”?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the speedy response. A useful link. I had a quick look and the nearest agent to me is North London, (I am in Reading) so I will give them a ring.
