I've spent a lot of time reading back through past posts in this forum and a recurring theme (as well as the assorted sagas of soft top roofs!) is a bunch of alphabet soup - ABD and SBC.
I give in - what are they (or what were they? And why should they be avoided? (I know my A209 CLK doesn't have either - but I'm curious.....)

Specimen post: "ABD and SBC were just examples of good systems but dreaded repair costs" ;

Cheers

Also I think it’s not a case of avoiding vehicles with these systems but rather, understanding their function and appreciating the associated maintenance costs.

Both are quite great system when working...

SBC goodwill has extended, most of cases go 100% cover

Mercedes brought in new complex systems to try and resolve issues no one had -

ABC when new was better than cheap terrible suspension. Odd how RR and Jag never needed silliyness to make a car ride and drive well (its not, steel springs and dampers are much better). ABC can be troublesome and its very expensive to repair. 2 year fluid changes and regular use mostly sort these

SBC was just a mistake and as it only lasted 2 years its pretty clear Merc agree. SBC moved away from a vac pump tractors use for vac power assistance on brakes or the simple almost 100% reliable vac diaphragm many petrol cars still use 70 years after they invented it. As it was new electronic tech on a safety system they went silly and built in a time counter to throw messages that it needs repairing - without realising most german taxi boys had the light on 9 months after buying the car - so they just flashed another 400k uses before EOW warning comes up on the dash - USA class action lawsuit moved warranty on any brake components to 10 years as punishment, Europe they just stole owners money

you can reset the counter and replace the back up battery hiding under the washer bottle, and many of the lights go away for a few years... the nitrogen sphere needs swapping out, but no one bothers and its grumbly and is happily busy destroying the pressure pump...

And like all terrible cars and design faults in the past, these are the too have cars in the future, just look at square steering wheeled Allegros, or TR7's to name a few of the most horrible :eek:
Buy ABC and SBC now and reek the benefits in years to come ;)

SBC = Sensotronic Brake Control
ABD = Not sure about this one. Automatic Bumper Drain ? Angry Binge Drinker ? I'll have a think.
