The brake light switch should solve this problem, £9 and easy to fit

no gear change

just reading about your not changing gear problem the brake lamp switch been faulty will cause your abs bas/esp lamp to come on but as for not changing gear the switch does not command the gear box ecu to do this just a simple switch that says im on or im off the gearbox will function without it id say you need to visit some where with a star machine or an auto lodgic

Yes I thought the lever was locked, so not brake switch.. We have had 3 cars of late where the battery voltage was too low, this could put on the ABS lamp and lock the gearbox up

Should be min 12.5volt before start and 13.8volt running

bas esp abs

under voltage would bring the lights on juct turn the steering full left then full right 3 to 4 times reseting the steering angle sensor this would not lock the electronic selector module think we need a bit more info malcome can d be selected or is it just sticking in gear once on the move?

W203 too

I've had these failure messages on my dash twice in the last fortnight, too.
When I next start the car, they've vanished.

Does it really just indicate a dodgy brake light switch?
Is yours fixed now, chuckie?

This is a hard one to answer, though I do not think that you need a new switch as once this fails it happens all of the time. If the faults are not on the second start, this normally indicates that the battery has a slight problem with one of the cells

Thanks, Malcolm.
Car is on a 52-plate and I'd guess the battery is the original.
I'll maybe get the stealer to replace it at its next service.

My W203 has been doing this on and off for a few months now (dash lights not gearbox)
I initially went to get the brake light switch only to find out that mine does not have one!
I will get a new battery fairly soon.
BTW when I was getting a price for the battery was told that certain saloon w203 (CDi's) had a battery recall out on them and if it had not been done it still would be replaced FOC after all these years, unfortunately mine is an estate and not covered under the recall :-(

Be ready with your VIN when you call them ;)

My Dealer say MB have sold 9000 brake light switches in the past 12 months. Seems this info is available to dealers on line. Good job they don't cost too much.

ABS/ESP Warning Light

Chuckie.

I had the same problem on my E320CDi both warning lights came on so I stopped turned off the ignition, when I tried to re-start by turning the key it had no effect. The gear lever would not move either. The fault was that the fuse for the ABS/ESP (sorry can't remember the fuse number but it's located under the right hand top fuse cover) had ruptured, on further investigation it transpires that Mercedes dealerships knew about the fault because a service bulletin had been issued, up-rating the fuse from 15 amp to 20 amp. The recovery guy who sorted mine for me said that he had had at least 4 cars with the same fault in the last month. Thanks Mercedes dealerships, mine had only recently had a very expensive A service, so if they already knew of the problem why did they not change the fuse - I guess they don't really want customer satisfaction!

The estates are made in a different factory and did not suffer from the faulty battery problem
