ABS, BAS, ESP Warning and limp mode

Facelift model W210 E320 CDi.

Driving down to Milton Keynes yesterday, when the ABS, BAS, and ESP warning lights and malfunction warnings popped up. The engine and gearbox went into limp home mode, and tiptronic gear display was blank.

Stopped at some roadwork traffic lights on the A5, put it into park while waiting, and thought I wonder if I can rest this by turning off and on.

That was a *big* mistake. Stopped ok, but would not restart (no response to key), so ended up causing obstruction on A5 for two hours (locked in park).

So to cut a long story short after mobilo life guy couldn't work out what was wrong, and I didn't want the car to be recovered to MB Milton Keynes, I got Green Flag to recover it to the Coventry dealership.

So on Monday I'd like to have some idea what they are talking about, and to understand enough that they don't "rip me off" by fitting a new computer if one isn't needed.

Thanks Dave

Could be a simple overvoltage relay problem, when it fails the first to safegaurd is the ABS ECU. could also be brake light switch on cars with a can bus, the switch can make the car lock into P. could well be this one, hope so at £8.75 + ½hour labour. Its most likely to be this fault, its common, and easy to do yourself

Nice to see yet another person who does not trust Mobilo. They refused to cover my last breakdown too. They did however collect the car but despite the dealer in Ireland saying the problem was covered Mobilo refused and left me high and dry. Interesting you say MB Coventry because they recovered my car on the M6, repaired it and 5 months later the exact same fault occured....brake failure.... and MB refuse to cover it. MB Coventry Wheler Road gave me a receipt with '2 year Pan European Warranty' stamped on it. Coventry were fine, car ready when promised but all left a sour taste with missed ferries and appointments.

Here's what was wrong.

The fan under the ECU box had a fault which was blowing a fuse inside the ECU box, taking most/all ECUs down.

Parts cost £87, labour cost to diagnose 2 hours and 1.5 hours to fit the replacement fan. All at £90 per hour  . At least they gave me a 10% discount on the labour at the end of the day.

So pleased you are going, and we now know a new fault, I know the labour is not cheap, and its one of those faults where you do not feel any improvement in the car after spending £500.

I had exactly same problem with w210 E240 estate, the car was tqken to main dealer in Southampton total cost £68 they did say that in UK you don't need a fan for ecu and not worth fitting new one, only needed in hotter climates
