I have a 1997 C180 Classic auto, that has just been serviced from a so called dealer, upon its return the ABS/BAS lights are on, having complained I have been told its not their fault and to sling my hook, nice man, the car drive Ok but under heavy breaking the ABS does not operate, the garage said they tried to reset the faults on the computer with no success any ideas on what this could be and is it a problem I could tackle myself, also the gearbox oil should have been changed but the car is still not changing up everytime and will hold at high revs until I release the throttle, I was also charged for a throttle sensor to overcome this as well !!!!!!. How can I check the condition and level of gearbox oil as there is no dipstick ? many thanks for your help.

Was this a main Mercedes-Benz dealer? it sounds like they have treated you very badly indeed.

I would find a reputable independant MB specialist with access to STAR diagnostics. Your car needs attention from someone who knows what they are doing, and more importantly cares what they are doing.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, I hope it gets sorted soon for you.

You can remove the plastic cap on the fluid tube, take a piece of curtain wire and push it into the bottom of the box and the fluid should be about 5.6cm on the test stick when it is warm.

You can change the fluid by removing the sump and filter, then the torque converter drain plug that you could have on a 97 car

Best to get a fault code read out, it could be the reluctance rings or the ABS control unit, some 202's have the OVP relay, where fitted this is the normal prolem

Do check the control box. My indie had traced the fault to the module box under the bonnet, but then the intermittent fixed itself, so he couldn't positively locate the problem at that stage. I was getting intermittent ADS/ESP/ABS faults until I firmly re-seated the ADS module. I don't know what box-of-tricks you have but they can get iffy contacts.

I too am getting intermittent ABS and ESP lights on my 2002 ML270. What is this ADS module and where can I find it? Thanks, Peter.

Best to get the car on STAR, it can save a lot of time and money
