My ABS light has started flickering (when moving ) immediate application of brakes causes it to go out momentarily. Anybody give me some clues as to where to start looking and how to diagnose Think my first step is to clean up front sensors????.By the way is the rear sensor off the diff or off the auto gearbox? I've not looked underneath yet Thanks

Are you sure it's ABS light & not just pad warning light.

My 124 estat has developed the problem of the ABS light permananetly on. and when trying the brakes the ABS function is not working. Any chance of a mouse pusher understanding where to begin looking for the fault.

The over voltage relay is the number one cause for this

MY 1989 124/250D did just that every day it would illuminate and then extinguish witin a minute.
I have checked and cleaned up all the wiring bits even though they looked OK, but the fault persisted.

As part of my pre MOT servicing I checked the front wheel bearings for play and found some on the passenger side that to me warranted attention, once adjusted the ABS lamp stopped illuminating daily but still did it once a week or so, adjusting the other front hub almost completely cured the problem, the lamp has only illumiated (and gone off again) whilst driving once in the last 4000 miles.

I still have a minor problem as you see but its an intermittent one and I aint going to go daft on it untill it gets bad again. My OVP relay is the next suspect but its held behind the battery with some sort of amazon proof clip that I could not release easily. The next suspect is the ABS controller (also behind the battery), my reason for this is that the lesser german car company had major reliability issues with poor soldered conections on the PCB in this very similar Bosch unit.

Ensure that your front sensors are clean, remove the M6 bolt and pull them from the hub, check for rusted teeth on the ring (down the hole in the hub) and bits stuck to the probes pole piece.
