ABS warning light came on

The ABS warning light stayed on, on my 1997 C250 turbodiesel at the start of a long drive. I switched off and restarted but it stayed on until I stopped for a break 100 miles later. Since then, it has gone off on starting up each time. The first time this has happened in the 12 years I have had the car and the brakes worked normally. I guess it was just a temporary fault, but if anyone can throw a bit more light on anything I can check I'd be grateful. Don't want it happening again as the MOT is due very soon! Many thanks. You may have a marginal signal from a wheel sensor caused either by a bad sensor or corrosion or dirt on a reluctor ring.
