My question is simple: How often, if ever, does anyone adjust the brightness of their head unit display to cope with different external conditions (top up or down, cloudy or sunny, day or night - other than the automatic day/night capability - or different DVD film brightness).
Thanks in advance for you response

I think this is my fifth car with COMAND, and I've only ever left it on Automatic mode.

Me too (Auto mode not 5 Mercs). But, in NTG1 - and probably in many other iterations of COMAND, under Services you can adjust the display brightness, presumably to cope with different image brightness in different circumstances (rather than the day/night auto switch setting).
My question related to that user choice and it would seem from the lack of response, not to be a hot button issue!
Thanks for your comment

I think you're all missing the point….

outside the ability for the display to auto toggle day / night, user adjustment is provided, not as a day to day toy. but to set the level you as the user wants. Once you have driven in enough of the likely conditions you use the vehicle in, you will have adapted its settings to the best comprise for your use and your vision that you can tolerate. And on an odd occasion may wish to fight its incompetence now and again if the reward is worth the stress

I do not disagree with what you say. I am modifying the HU display format and only wanted to know if user brightness adjustment was considered a must have (which clearly it is not), and thus possibly needed incorporation.

I didnt know the brightness was adjustable ....
On the NTG1 HU, SERV then SYSTEM, then DISPLAY and finally BRIGHTNESS.
As the car ages, so the backlight to the display weakens and can need tweeking.
Once the car has woken up, on the NTG1 HU, the Display Backlight is always on (even when the HU is off)

the difference becomes clear on unlit roads.... back lane scratching can be an issue, but you likely get over it.... but a long drive on an unlit motorway it should soon have you reaching for a hammer to make proper modifications.

Saab anyone.... kill everything aside from faint glow on the speedo, with one press !

When I put auto lights on her Focus it comes with the instrument rheostat dimming feature. Its part of the posh the auto light switch - I told her about it (as I was excited even the stereo now dims alongside the instrument cluster) and she just thought I was gadget freak, that could get excited about anything. After I set it up to half the brightness it had before.... she comes back from work after 15 mile on the M4 in winter, and she's enthusing about it, like I was.
