Folks,

I have a 2002 e200k estate with 40 k on the clock.
When pressing the throttle from idle up to 1500 revs or so there is a strange whirr \ rattle from the front right of the engine. I have heard that this can be a failed advanced timing mechanism.

Can anybody shed any light on this - The mechanism is underneath the plastic dust cover on the front end of the engine - what does this unit actually do, can the car be driven with it disconnected (black power lead)

Any knowledge \ help much appreciated.

Thks

it is basically variable valve timing, it adjusts the timing of the cam so valves operate at different times, for economy and performance issues, and yes these can wear and cause this rattle, sounds like the correct area you are describing, prob best to take it somewhere who knows these cars as quite fiddly and timing up of engine is needed to perform this job. it can be driven disconnected but may put light on and engine will not be as efficient.
