I bought a 300E 4 matic back in December and recently the steering column has begun to seriously vibrate on occasions when travelling at around 70mph. my local garage said they only got it to happen once in 3 tries and did not know what to suggest, thought it might be something to do with the 4 wheel drive(helpful). Any suggestions would be welcome.

When this only happens at certain speeds its normally wheel balacing, in your case the fronts. You may have a little wear in the steering, on hitting a small bump or hole its sets the wheels off shaking.
Get the front wheels balanced, should solve it.

damper

the steering damper is very cheap and easy to diy relace. just two bolts and i think about £25. sure your wheels may be out of balance, but i had this problem, which got worse and when i got the old one off it was totally nackered. believe me the experience of a sever shake on the motor way was enough to challenge my confidence in the car. recomend you replace asap!!!

Check for buckled wheels too. Balancing won't always pick this up
