Make sure all the electrics work, some of the early ones had gremlins.

Got exactly same car 54 plate. No problems to speak of but only 28,500 on clock.
Read the Manual and then interrogate the oil level (cold level) and miles to next service via the steering wheel buttons. There is no engine dip stick on this model.
Tyre pressures want to be around 32 psi all round (cold), (look inside filler cap for information). I find best driven in 'S' position in auto box. Remember the auto learns your style and it may be some weeks before you really feel at home with gear changes.
On long runs expect around 45/48 mpg. Enjoy.

Warranty Direct do seem to be a pushy crew. Having said that a friend of mine has had 3 separate claims on his 95000 mile Passat in the last year-no problems.
Let us know what your quote is when you get sorted. I'm faced with buying a warranty next year.

On the car, make sure everything has been done inc gbox oil and filters - may not have been. Also make sure the gbox electrical plg has been sorted or your ECU can fill up with oil. Otherwise - general service history as always.
Nothing major on the 270 engine - I am told glowplugs can start playing up around 60k but I've just flicked over to 60 and all ok so far.

Warranty wise - I'm not impressed with any warranty co. Yes if you hit right, I've no doubt they will pay out, but in my experience, no matter what has failed, it's been excluded, so I'm now without a warranty and hopefully quids in as a result.
