Iirc the vector was actually the twin turbo one.

Nope the ttid was the twin turbo (the vector spec had both the single turbo 150 diesel and the ttid 180 diesel)
The single had some EGR and swirl flaps issues (UK Saab's is a good forum) and front springs can be a weak point, but otherwise as reliable as most (and safer than many)
He's got a decent budget though....
The 1.8t or 2.0t or 2.0T are nearly bomb proof petrols should a diesel not be necessay (the bigger engines are likely too expensive to insure)
