Hi All,

My old C200 estate is at the end of its life now and I’m just looking for a replacement and was hoping to pick the collective brains here for a bit of advice.

I’m thinking about either a C or E class estate around 2010 – 2012 ish mark, so likely to be pushing 100k. I’ve always felt the C was a little small once loaded up with the rest of that family, which is why I’m considering the E as well, and I’ve heard good things about reliability which is very important – need as little downtime as possible.

I don’t do a huge amount of mileage, 30 mile round trip to work each day mainly duel carriage way, around town over most weekends and the 300 - 400 mile trip once a month, but would still like something relatively economical – my current C averages about 30, which I’m happy with as I do have a bit of a heavy right foot but I’m by no means an enthusiastic driver – those days are behind me!

So any suggestions for that age/mileage would I be best considering a C or E? Any thoughts on best engines considering the driving I do for reliability, diesel/petrol? Are the maintenance costs vastly different between the two cars? Should is spend more on a newer, lower mileage C over the E?

Any help appreciated.

I'd go for an E over a C
Depending upon where you want to drive a Euro 5 Diesel could be a problem. The M272 V6 Petrol engine is pretty decent (post 2008) the only issues is trying to find one as they weren't popular at the time as Diesels were heavily promoted at the time.

The best value out there is a 212 E class saloon/estate 2011-12 which is EU5. MB tried really hard to produce a reliable car and succeeded IMO. The E350cdi 265bhp is the one to go for - there are still some good ones out there at relatively low mileage with FMBSH just take your time and the right car will come up - won’t be cheap though regarding the current sales climate

So I'm feeling the consensus is to go with the E Class over the C.

Ideally was looking to pay a little less that the ones mentioned, hence why I said they'd probably be pushing the 100k mark.

Would diesel be ok considering the limited driving that I do? I've always though you needed to do lots of miles to avoid issues with diesels?

My S212 does circa 3k miles p.a. and does it without problem, if it starts a DPF regeneration which it does every 250-300 miles I run the car until it completes usually 10 miles/15 mins. Your mileage is exactly what a diesel Is for IMO I don’t fit that category anymore but MB sorted the DPF system on these cars very well and they seldom present problems

I have a W204 C 350CDi and will go to an E or CLS 350CDi / d next (Probably)

You do a long run and it's not all stop start so should be fine, there are not many petrol cars out there

I have a W212 2012 E350 CDi Saloon with 53000 miles - absolute gem, reliability is second to none imho, I may sell if you are interested - PM me.
