I've got a superb 320 Elegance CLK (76k) which i love but i need something bigger and am looking at a 320 S class which you can get at around £20k with 50k+ miles and FMBSH.

I've had a couple of Mercs but know nothing of the potential problems with an 'S'

Any comments/advice appreciated

An early car will be more likely to suffer from production teething problems, but hopefully these will have been sorted by now if it has a full service history.

The new-shape S is a good car and you shouldn't have any problems. the engine and transmissions are similar to what you already have and should be reliable. However, the use of electronics has increased in this model and this is where the gremlins may be found, if any.
