Hi guys,

My C Class decided to go into limp mode last night and not let me out of gear 2 when I switched to manual to see why the car felt weird. Shortly after, the engine light came on so I called the AA out.

They plugged their computer in and the below errors were returned, the car drove me to work (30 miles) today and it felt a little sheepish but I got here okay thankfully.

Any advice would be great, I've booked into the mechanics for tomorrow morning but want to understand what's going wrong before I go.

Cheers,

A friends garage, I don’t think they specialise in Mercedes
Think you'll find Most non merc specialists will diagnose turbo with boost problems. I had my Vclass looked at by a very good garage that luckily inspected the turbo and changed their mind. Couldn't diagnose it so I'm now booked in with Alex Crow in Stowmarket. He recons he can help me.

They plugged in the diagnostics machine and it’s reading low pressure on the turbo and if they accelerate the turbo is whistling, just hope £1500 is a reasonable price

I don't think it's the turbo. The codes indicate that you have a boost sensor issue and/or an air leak on the intake side. It could be as simple as a corroded connector or a plug that has come off.

I'd strongly recommend an MB specialist. Having said that I've seen a BMW Main Dealer diagnose a failed turbo when it was an exhaust manifold leak...

Get a MB indy to look at it.
First rule of merc ownership - find a mercedes indy.

If you have an air leak you get low boost pressure and a whistle. To check the turbo you should remove the ducting and check the impeller play (you can do this with your hand).

If the car has high miles, say over 100k and oil change intervals have been stretched then maybe the turbo but garages seem to often plump for a turbo replacement. For me the codes say it's something else so I think a second opinion is in order.

£1500 for a replacement turbo is probably the going rate.

What C class is it? I know the w204 diesels suffer with split intercooler pipes. I managed to catch mine before it went into limp mode. Spotted it by having the window down and hearing a loud hiss as the turbo starts boosting. Not really a whistling noise though.

I had the turbo boost sensor oil seal fail which put me in to limp mode. Replaced no further problems.

Ill be stunned if a turbo fixes it....but ill guess we'll find out when the op spends his money...!!

My money is on an air leak from a pipe or the inlet manifold.

Use a mercedes independent who can plug in into a xentry star machine. If it is the turbo, you can get yours reconditioned for £600-ish+

OP, if you put your approximate location in your profile so it shows, there's a good chance one of us will be able to recommend a decent MB indie with Star/Xentry, which is what you need. We've seen many instances of generalist garages trying to cure a fault by replacing part after part (at great expense), owner finally gets to a decent MB indie and problem is cheaply, quickly and easily fixed - and is nothing to do with the expensivly replaced parts!

Maidstone Kent,

One week on and it’s still in the garage. I’m going to tell them I’ll take it elsewhere I think so a suggestion near Staplehurst would be handy

Come down the M20 to J9 Ashford and take it to Arrowfleet Maintenance in Cobbs Wood Industrial Estate, https://www.arrowtaxisltd.co.uk/workshop, they maintain the Arrow Taxis fleet of E220's and have full Star/Xentry, rescued me when my dashboard lost its programming, and were not expensive especially as I paid cash!

I've also seen good reports of Steve Garlic :
