Mercedes fit Varta batteries from new and you can buy these as a replacement from places other than the dealers considerably cheaper. There will be a part number on your battery, it should be something like 562019048 for a Varta battery. There is a standard UK reference number for batteries but Varta dont seem to use them. The equvalent battery is an 013 or 027.

Car batteries are sold in different grades, 2 year, 3 year and 4 year guaranties. The longer the gurantee the thicker the plates used so the longer they should last. It is almost as if they have a timer in them as they usually pack up just after the guarantee runs out. No battery will last forever, they are only capable of a certain number of cycles. The thing that really shortens a batteries life is the number of times they are fully discharged, leaving the lights on until the battery is totally flat will seriously shorten it's life.

You should be able to get a good replacement battery such as an Exide, Varta, Lucas etc for around £40-£50. Be aware that the dealer may well charge an hours labour for fitting a battery!! It is only a ten minute job.

you could get a good battery from www.gsfcarparts.com

or www.eurocarparts.com-both can supply two different batteries-ie 2 or 3 yr warranty- i bought a bosch one from german and swedish with a 3yr warranty-my experience has been a good one so far in that i would buy one from them again of a similar brand-it is also a good price since they have the clout of being bulk buyers and sell to the public at warehouse prices.

Thanks for the reply. I had not thought of Halfords.
My MOT test warned me of the battery.
I had no previous indication, but will take notice of cruise control, rear screen heater and acceleration :)
