Hi all,

My C320 CDI W203 has gone into limp home mode, again !!

I've had it on a diagnostics laptop and it's brought up the error:

"Intake manifold runner position sensor/switch circuit range performance bank 1"

Anyone like to put this into plain English for me?

Thanks

Darren

Depending on what has given you that error message, it sounds like it is refering to the inlet manifold motor/flaps position. I think this is a common fault on your car, as the turbo seals leak oil onto the inlet port motor.

About 2 years ago I had this problem and one of the plastic arms to the motor controlling the flaps had snapped. It cost me a grand to get repaired. I later had the limp home return and it was an oil leak onto the inlet motor.

If this has gone again I'll be livid !!

Yep. IPS motor fault. If you've had a linkage go in the past, it may well be you need to change the manifold as this will be gunked up, meaning the motor can't operate the flaps as they stick.

Be prepared for the worst, been there myself, nearly £2000.

To reiterate what st4 says it sounds like it needs a new Manifold and motor. £2000 for a new manifold and motor sounds ****** expensive to me mind you.

Some people have been successfull with removing the manifold entirely and thoroughly cleaning it out.

The 270cdi engines on the ML are common for this, and as such one can buy replacement pattern manifolds that are a lot cheaper than Mercedes.

I know nothing of this model but I am curious on why one would need to buy a new manifold and not clean up the existing one?

As the inlet flaps break off or become brittle, the replacements do not have the flaps installed

at what point did they start to fit these flaps etc? would a 2001 W203 220CDi be affected?

Could you elaborate on this, it is news to me!

I read a couple forum posts, where people had bought a pattern replacement that had the swirl flaps blanked out. I have never looked into it myself.

Im not sure, I will double check on epc shortly, but I think they would yes. It only becomes an issue with an engine thats run partially open its lots of its life as it spends more of its time recircing exhaust gases that cause the blockage in the intake.

Hi sounds like inlet port shut off motor at fault, if you have the om642 engine fitted very common fault not bad to do new motor and clips required not manifold.
