I need to replace the tyres on my 1971 350SL (205/70 14). this is proving tricky and costly. has anyone any ideas about what tyres would be a good idea? and where i should get them from? the local tyre places dont stock them.

Penelope_pitstop,

I neglected to say that I have used Blackcircles twice and have found them great. It's important that you choose a reputable fitter, though.

DavidSL500 has used Mytyres and recommends

See the thread further down - "Good News - Goodyear FI's on C43" that I started last week

I think that the Michelin XWX were original fitting, I have read road tests from the launch of the model stating how good they are (were).

I'm not suprised that they are not available from stock, however any reputable tyre retailer should be able to source anything you want as long as you give them a fews days - even Kwik Fit!

1971 make it a very early car, what colour and is it manual or auto?

Mark.

I've just shod mine with Barums

and am as happy as a chap with four new tyres. I can recommend the Bravuris as a good tyre, with plenty of grip. Can't say about longevity, as I've only had them a month. Be careful about doing them in pairs only, I nearly came unstuck big time that way. Cost about 55 plus Vat each up north, on 205/65 15s. We all have our preferred rubberware, but in the end it's up to you and what you want to pay for. don't be too worried about names you haven't heard of, yet.

Welcome aboard by the way, Penelope. We need more classic SL types.
