Hello everyone.
This is my first post, although I usually follow the forum.
I bought a 2002 ML270 about six months ago. The MB is in good "shape" let's say 6 out of 10 and my goal is to restore/update this wonderful SUV to keep it with me for several years. I'm love it.
Fortunately, all major mechanical parts are in good working order. The main problems to be solved are: replacing the windscreen washer fluid reservoir, reviving the badly scratched leather on the seats, polishing or changing the headlights, checking/repairing the central locking device for remote locking/unlocking (it has been replaced by an aftermarket years ago, who knows why), the fuel door lock actuator, some exterior dents and scratches, and the no less important and/or difficult to fix, the BAS ESP, ETS, ABS and EPC lights (probably some sensor that needs to be replaced
However, this time I am looking for advice on the ignition key transponder. The previous owner gave me both factory keys. One works fine, but with the other the message "Startup error" appears.
After some research and testing, I found out that the transponder for the second key is missing. Strange, but the chip is not there.
The last owner (not the first), never noticed this, because he always used the same key, so who knows when this happened.
So, I think there are a few options to get around this. I mean, I can see at least these almost solutions:
- Remove the transponder from the key that works and fix it near the ignition cylinder so that the ring-antenna "catch" it and use both keys without the transponder (thus losing a security element although it could be replaced by a good anti-theft alarm).
- Go to a locksmith, buy to him a transponder and then ask him to clone it with the working transponder. (I'm not sure it's possible)
- Get a new PCF7935 transponder chip from ebay or aliexpress and somehow program the inmo via obd to accept it. But, I don't have the required obd interface to do that. (I guess I need an Abrite commander (or a Chinese clone), which would later be useful for other things, I guess... Any recommendations for an Abrite clone?)
So at first sight, the first option seams to be the one should be chosen by me, but I would like to ask if you think there is another option to consider.
Greetings to all.
