This may be a daft question, but i am fitting a new aerial on my 190, but the new aerial has 2 wires red & green and the one i removed has 3 wires red brown & black .
what goes to what?
Also, dose the central locking fuse also do the electric aerial as i think i may have blown the fuse when trying to sort the wires to the aerial.
Now when you stop laughing,i would be grateful for any help i can get as it is my first Merc and i love it to bit,s

Hi Snakeman, Welcome to the forum,

There must be an earth also. Probably on the aerial motor body
The green/yello would be the control signal from the radio

Red would be the pernament live (so theres power to retract after radio turned off)

On W124 E class the aerial pernament live is indeed on the same circuit as the C.L. and boot/dome light.

Have you power to the red wire. You need to sort this out first. The aeriel. One step at a time Snake.

The pernament live to radio is often on a different circuit to the pernament live of the aeriel. Also fuses often seem Aok and they turn out to be faulty.

You were right on closer inspection the fuse did look ok but had gone.
the c/locking is working and i am getting permenant live to the aerial but no switched live from the radio.
This could be due to a new cd player being fitted, i will check this out later but the c/locking was the main problem so i am grateful for you'r advice

Great Snake,

I don't know how the CD player has made any difference, unless you disconnected the green/yella wire from the back of the head unit. Did yu sort out a good earth to the motor body?

PS: From experience, its a good idea to change all the fuses on older cars, and clean up all the holders. It is a very cheap job to do.(just a few quid). Those 'pill' fuses give trouble after ten/fifteen years.

What make of head unit do you have.

The perm. live and earth to the CD changer is supplied from main live in at head, via main cable to changer. It, as well as the switch (green) wire for the aerial are usually on the bottom block of the head unit.

You are not saying if you have a problem with the changer.
You are also not saying if you got a good earth to the aerial.

There is a good earth at the aerial, the cd player is'nt the multi cd type,i have a notion that when the player was installed the existing aerial was goosed and they did'nt bother trying to connect it.I will get a chance to pull it out and see how it has been connected.

Bingo

I pulled the player out,the wire from the exting radio to the aerial was black, and as i thought it was taped up and pushed in.
as soon as i joined it to the aerial wire as detailed on the new cd player handbook it worked.
I know it was a small thing but i hated the thought of something on my baby not working right.
Thanks again.
