Hoovering the car the other week I noticed that my kickdown switch was missing the top button section. Couldnt see it anywhere in the footwell and suddenly realsed that since owning the car I have never actually used the kickdown at all. Okay in standard mode at 55mph and then foot flat I get a change down but always thought it was a bit sluggish ( i know sluggish is relative - it still goes like f..., i mean stink.

So fitted a new kickdown switch last night ( quite easy, just stand on your head in the footwell and swear alot) and this morning I found a nice piece of quiet road and tried the kickdown at 55mph......straight down to 2nd gear and j..a....s...u....s................ went back and collected my stomach. I now have a bigger smile than ever and even worse fuel consumption but who cares !!!!

I didn't notice this switch doing anything in 'S' mode. The only time it seemed to do something was in 'E' mode when you had to lean on it for overtaking purposes.

Spose that means you'll be able to beat me away from the lights at long last:) .
Was part of the switch actually missing? Is the new one as I described in the earlier thread?

Actually there was never much of a problem away from the lights though it did change up at 4000rpm in first. Big problem was cruising along at 50mph and overtaking. Boot it and it was only changing down to third - still not exactly hanging about with the amount of torque out of the V8 but nevertheless I felt it should be a bit smarter.

Now I have to remember to pull out before booting it otherwise I will just ram the vehicle in front up the backside !!

Switch was as described, heres the pic of the old one ..........

as stated
Can't bring myself to use that Kickdown thing.
Its just the sight of the Fuel Meter rocketing to the Red that brings out the Scot in me!

probably missing out on a lot of fun!

Stuart, missing out ? that smell of rubber, the smoke, your fuel tank emptying rapidly, pinned in your seat, your face being forced to the back of your head, your bank balance going down. Enjoy it while you can

I remember when I first realised the kickdown switch was there...it was a taxi trying to beat me off the light's when sheer determination made me drop my lead foot with more pressure than normal ...I had a massive grin for the rest of that day:cool:

I'm maybe not sure if I have this. Do all the MB autos have them, is it still on the modern boxes and/or deisel.

Genuinly not sure if I have it, what should I look for and what should I try.

Sounds like fun!!

every auto box has had them sinse year 1, what you do is if you have never used it, find a quiet road, drive along at say 30 mph you then press your right foot down to the floor sharply, your car should take off, back off right foot, and your car becomes a cruiser again.

So I don't need to press the peddle in any special way apart from hard to the floor?

I'll try it on my way to work tomorrow.

I know exactly what you mean....being a canny scot too.....mind you if I'm supposed to canny what the hell am I doing driving a 280 V6 and mainly town driving...

I much prefer dropping a cog or two on the bike....cheaper, quicker, and more fun.

Did you get to work in good time, or did you sail right past the door.
