Hi i have a 2001 CLK230 compressor. The Airbag light has come on again. The dealer resets it, tells me there is no reported faults and all is well for a time. Then it comes on again. It seems to come on after we have trouble locking the car. Both key fobs have had new batteries and work fine most of the time. Some time the car needs lots of attempts to lock. My Airbag SRS light is now on again. Can you help please.

Regards

Adrian

There must be stored faults for the light to come on. seems strange they say theres no fault, yet they reset it!!

Its most likely coincidence about the centre locking.

I,d ask them for a print out of the short test.

Hi Aussie Nick.
Thanks for a quick reply. I have been driving the car for a week or two with the light on. It does not change with a passenger in. Are you suspecting the seat sensor? It comes up quite often on the forum. Where is it located and i will give it a look.

Regards
Adrian

Check the little yellow plugs under the seats, these are the ones for the seat pad sensors.
dont unplug them with ignition key in or this will store a additional fault.
check if the plug is fitted correctly. You wont be able to tell if it is the fault as the seat sensors are within the cushion.

I had the same fault with a BMW 5 series,it was the wires in the wiring harness breaking because they were so brittle,it occurred 8 times,in the end a new harness was fitted, the wires are also connected to seat belt tensioners, when the airbag light is on the airbags are switched off so in the event of a collision they won't work(this is what BMW technician told me)When new batteries have been fitted to key fobs i believe they have to be installed in 30 seconds,if they've been left out for any length of time they may need re-programming,does everything else work windows open/close etc?

Have to isolate which seat its coming from. Has anyone spilt any liquid on seat ?
Before You attempt Jame's remedy try wiggling the wires of the suspect seat. Try applying pressure from the top of seat and also the underneath. You might have to poke your finger through the hole in the bottom to try to apply some pressure to the pad. I suspect that the sensor pad sometimes moves out of its correct location and then starts to misfire. I also suspect the front rim of the seat as a good location to apply pressure to. Make sure your ignition key is turned in the on position. If there is a pressure fault this test may indicate that this is this type of problem and a little gentle persuasion may bring the system back to normal operation.
Very good DIY thread from member James mc. Congratulations James.

As Ellsy Tanners above.

Just one tip, if you are working on a car and you have to remove or disconnect an air bag, do not turn the ign on while it is disconnected, otherwise you will have to get the fault code removed

SRS intermittent light

I have an 1998 SLK 230 and recently after being valeted the SRS light came on intermittently. Took it to the MB delaer as it was due its MOT and asked them to check it. Was told it was the sensor pad and would need replacing £150 for the part and £300 labour a small total of £450!. Thanks to the advice on this website, I decided to check it out for myself, and all it was, was the connector under the seat had been disconnected ( it probably got dislodged when being hoovered). Reconnected, no light and saved a packet! Many thanks!! :)

The light will have to be reset with a star machine i am afraid.

After I changed the seat sensor, and reassembled everything, the warning light stayed off. No 'Star' reset required.

Even so, would that mean that a fault code may still be stored in the system and should be cleared?

Also jiggling gently on the wires underneath and applying pressure at various locations to the seating area will sometimes work.

Originally I checked the wires.... my wife did the rest..... "applying pressure at various locations to the seating area" but I can't go into detail or it may need to be censored
