Air con and heated rear window

I have a 1991 W126 560 SEC. Generally all goes very well and car is fantastic to drive (apart from 16 (town) to 20 (motorway) mpg - but worth it for approx. 5000 miles a year total). But there is one major problem and a couple of niggles I would like to get sorted out early next year. The air conditioning, heated rear window and rear blind don't work.

All help from the experts out there greatly appreciated.

AIR CON: I have had it looked at (re-gas, dyes etc.) and apparently the compressor is leaking from a hairline crack underneath the unit right down the centre. It needs a new compressor and this means you have to have a new receiver dryer. Parts labour and VAT come to £1082.35. Can anyone offer a cheaper solution or, if as I suspect there is no short-cut, someone who can supply and fit a new unit more cheaply. I live in central London.

HEATED REAR WINDOW: the fuse in the fuse box is fine (although I had to replace it as it had burned out) but it doesn't work. Where do I look next?

REAR BLIND: You can hear the motor working fine but it doesn't go up and down. I am (reliably?) informed that it merely needs an 'inertia spring' to get it going again. Anyone know where you can get such a thing from?

Thanks everyone

Re air con pump, go to a breakers, pump is nothing special, easy to find same pump, the evaporator will only need replacement if exposed to air, not sealed.
Some firms do try and dry them first, worth a try?

Rear window, is lamp on when you press switch

Thanks for aircon advice. Yes, lamp is on for heated rear window when pressed.

Bit wary about going to a breakers for an aircon unit - how do you know that the one you get isn't broken - they seem quite delicate to me.

the relay N10 was upgraded to 30 amp, very little info on this.
you will need a voltmeter to test for 12 volt at the terminals on the left hand side of window.

Thanks

It has a new 30amp fuse in it. I'll try the voltmeter in the new year. Maybe Santa will bring me one.

to make one point clearer on the Air con.
when you have a new pump take the car to the re chargers, they will then dry the system out, that being the case you will need nothing else. if it cant be dried out they will tell you what else to replace. do not disconnect anything now as it will make things worse, if you buy another pump seal the inlet and outlet.
