Hi

I've a 2000 year old shape C220CDI. There is a problem with the ventilation system that I've noticed occuring during the hot weather, but now seems to happen all the time.

When using the Economy ventilation. there seems to be a slight chemical smell that enters the cabin. When the air-con is on instead of economy, the smell isn't noticeable so much. It does blow cold air, but it's not ice-cold as it is in my Honda.

Also in hot weather when switching the Economy on, the windows initially steam up slightly.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks

Alex

Hi AlexParx

It sounds like the Air Con system requires a service.
If the gas in the Air Con system is low, the system will not cool as efficiently, also when the gas is low there can sometimes be a hissing noise inside the car from the air vent area, this is also an indication that the system reguires a service. The chemical smell is possibly a build up of bacteria on the eveperator, this can also be rectified as part of the service. When was the pollen filter last replaced?

The economy button does nothing more than to turn off the a/c.

The car will tend to mist, as turning off the a/c releases the moisture held in the system (you might notice a steamy 'sauna' smell) and as the now humid air hits the previously cooled glass, then the glass will mist up.

It could be that the evaporator drain is blocked, and changing the pollen filter is always a good thing to do.

I agree entirely. I have the same car, model, year as yours, and the same problems with the Air con originally. Through posting on here I was recommended to change the pollen filter - it solved all of my problems and has been great since Feb when I did the deed.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Thanks!

I'll get the aircon serviced and the pollen filter replaced. I bought the car 5 months ago, and I don't think the pollen filter has ever been replaced.

I've said this several times before - but after having cocked up the a/c on the E class the Stealership a/c service is really worth every penny.

Fresh smelling and icy cold when our C was serviced.

New member folks, Have a `99 elegance TD. Magic car but, the economy button will not go off, I cannot get "air", had it checked for coolant, fully pressurised, just can`t get the compressor to kick in! Would appreciate an imput please. Much obliged.

Alex - original problem solved?

Would love to know what the eventual outcome of this was, as I have an identical problem with my C220CDi. I know it isn't the pollen filter but suspect the condenser. Did you get it fixed OK and was it expensive...?

Cheers

A/C control unit, or wiring fault, seized compressor (the td has a sensor that switches comp. off if it locks up) possibly pressure switch on receiver drier.
As for smelly a/c, you can buy a cleaner that you put in the car which slowy releases ,you keep the a/c on full, recirculating, windows and doors shut, takes about ten minutes, also change filter as suggested, and also check the air plenum chamber (plastic bit below windscreen) isn't full of water, the drain is on the l/h lower side and often the rubber flap that covers the drain hole sticks to the drain tube and blocks, this then fills with water and enters the hvac system, as for not being cold enough, suspect loss of gas, heater stuck on, cooling fans not working.
