In my opinion air-con is not really a diy job. Sure you could probably buy the parts and fit them yourself but you would have no way of knowing if everything was sealed properly until the air-con specialist started to re-gas the system (they should put a deep vacuum in the system for a length of time to check the seals, if the pressure is maintained then all should be ok). Much better to let them do the work and accept responsibility for any problems. It shouldn't be a big job, unlike the evaporator which is usualy buried deep within the dash!

Just had my condenser replaced, incidently the filter / dryer was replaced as well, as at this age it would be false economy not to. basically it cost me £400 all in by getting an a/c specialist to do it all for you usually they guarantee parts & work for 12 months.. this was on a 1998 e320

now the system is so so c c ccold....

condenser's usually fail due to corrosion or holes from stones etc.

i would get it done very soon, as (i'm told) if air moisture gets in it could mess up your entire a/c and then it would cost lots more..
