Just a quick question, do most of you leave your ac on all the time? Does it really use a lot of petrol or contrary to popular belief, is the fuel consumption minimal?
If you do a search on Air Con you will find its been covered many times. we all leave it on all of the time, the cost is minimal, compaired to the cost of repair if you don't.
I get my aircon serviced every two years in Manchester from Airconco. The elderly gent who owns it recommended that I should leave the aircon on all the time as it then constantly lubricates the compressor. It does increase your fuel consumption but is a lot better than opening your windows. You also get better quality air as it is dry and filtered. Others on this site have advised to switch off the aircon a couple of miles/10 minutes before reaching your destination to allow certain parts to dry and therefore prevent rusting. I keep mine on all the time (I've not got in to the habit of switching off before reaching my destination).
Current thinking is leaving your a/c on affects the consumtion by 4-5% in cars, 12-15% in buses and coaches.
The effect will be greater in hot weather as most systems have 'demand sensing'.
Small engines will be affected more than larger ones.
