air con not powerful enough

Hi,

I've just joined and wondered if anyone could advise me what my 1997 c240 may need? I have just had the aircon regassed and, though it is refrigerating the air, it isn't blowing out much. Even with the EC light off I put the blower on full and it makes a pathetic noise and pushes out a fraction of the air it should. I believe the system is running at low pressure (don't know what that actually means)...is this why the air doesn't blow out much, and any ideas what it could be? MB want £150 to do a check and I can't afford to pay that, plus parts on top!

Help, anyone!

Thanks,

Jane.

check your pollen filter 1st, then fan and regulator next.

It sounds to me as if the problem is more with the fan than the aircon system itself.

I'll readily admit that I can't comment on the C240, but I'd check out the fan first.

Does it sound as if the fan is speeding up as you press the button to increase the fan speed?

Does the fan blow hard and fast if you switch to defrost the windscreen with the temperature on full?

With the EC light on (aircon off) does the air flow speed increase?

Switch to direct the air to different outlets and see if there's any difference.

Things to get checked:
Air inlet under bonnet isn't blocked.
Air filter in car isn't blocked (pollen filter).
Fan motor brushes.
Duovalves (not sure if fitted to your car) - they drive the system which redirects air to different outlets.

I would have thought that a decent autoelectrician would be able to sort the fan out for you.

if I had to guess I'd go for pollen filter. Your aircon sounds like its working ok from your description. If it's original it could be well blocked by now. Easy test, just remove it and try the fan again. Its a very common problem.
After that, then yes regulator or fan.

Try switching the fan to defrost /demist the windows..it should run full blast, from what you say it would appear the fan regulator is playing up

Thanks

Thanks for all your advice guys. I will get an autoelectrician to have a look. Just a thought before I do though.....the pollen filter....is it easy to take out myself? How do I get to it? Sorry...I'm a typical clueless woman, but I do appreciate all your help.

Hi,
Very easy to fit, removal of under dash tray on the passenger side couple of sliding clips to remove old filter.
I got installation instructions with mine when I bought the new filter.

Thanks guys...you've all been so helpful...and you were all right with the filter. It was clogged bigtime. A trusted mechanic has sorted it for me...exactly where you said it would be Blobcat... I believe it is a changover year (1997) when they were located either under the bonnet or inside the cabin.

You guys sure know your stuff!

Jane.
