Definitely not a diy job if the system is full of gas.

Yes thanks, thats what is going to happen cant get it until next week, just after some idea of what it could be and possible costs involved, nothing worse than getting a large unexpected bill.

For anyone looking at this problem, I had the same on a recent W221 S350 purchase, I tracked the issue to a blown blower motor resistor block mounted on the blower cradle which lives under the glove box in my car. Replaced the failed block and aircon runs like a dream.

As mioba said, codes read using BM STAR diagnostics.
Once working keep the air con on all the year round, set the temperature, nice dry air and almost no window fogging in winter.
2 cars over 22 years done nothing to air con, use or loose it.

Indeed the only thing I have done on my AC is a regas. I found my w220 was making a high pitch sound at around 7 years and it was due to low gas. I regass every 7 years now.

AC only gets switched off on very hot days when I am about a mile from home so the condenser can dry out to prevent water sitting and rotting it out.

Re whether the compressor is kicking in or not is to locate the compressor in the engine bay and with the help of an assistant in the car switch the compressor on and off if the magnetic clutch /pulley on the front of the compressor engages you will see it rotate at auxiliary belt speed it’s not unknown for the magnetic clutch to fail
