I believe the reciever/drier is the filter for the system. If anything goes wrong with the A/C system it should be changed as when its exposed to atmospheric pressure for over a few hours it stops working.. Thats what i was told anyway..
If you don't replace the receiver drier then the moisture that enters the AC system reacts with the R134a and turns in to H2SO4, in laymans terms this is sulphuric acid.
Given that 90% of the AC system is aluminium, well we all know what happens when sulphuric acid contacts aluminium.
I remember reading that Mercedes-Benz recommend replacing the receiver drier every time the AC system is broken in to.
