The most expensive part of the system is the evaporator and heater matrix,it cost over £1000 in a SL and you have to take off the whole dash.
SUMMER, turn the air con off 5 min before the end of your journey and this will allow the evaporator and heater matrix to dry out before you park up. thus preventing the rot that attacts them. You have all seen the puddle of water under the car when you park.
WINTER. Both air con and climate control.
Run the system below the ambient air temperture for at least 5 min, several times a month.
. This will engage the compressor and help stop leaking at the seals.
