Air Con (W164) query

Dear Experts

I’ve just taken delivery of a new M-Class 320Cdi (W164) which came with the standard climate control.

With the A/C on and in ‘Auto’ mode the side windows, especially beyond the B and C pillars mist up heavily, when there is more than two of more of us in the car. I’ve never had this so extreme with car before with air conditioning.

Also I’ve noticed no air coming out of the rear console vents, even with the optional A/C rear rest left switched on. I believe with the luxury climate control there is an option to control the rear vents, although this option doesn’t exist with standard unit should I not get some output from the rear vents?

Even with the blower fan on max the windows still struggle to clear in the rear and the car air feels humid as a result.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem or could recommend a course of action, or should I take it back to the dealer to be sanity checked?

Cheers

If the a/c really is on, then the windows should clear pretty quickly.

My W203 (my first MB) has a strange setup of the controls:
A/C is ON when the button light is OFF, yet Auto mode is selected when its button light is ON.

I also think that in Auto, once the car is up to the set temp, then it doesn't move much air through the car, especially in slow moving traffic - I tend to switch mine to manual and set a suitable fan speed.

Failing a mis-understanding of the controls, then it sounds like the a/c isn't working. It won't work at low temps (below about 4C) but it's not been cold enough for that.

Ml is differerent from other Mercs. The AC is on when the red light is on on the control button. I think the Rest you refer to is the residual heat control. It uses the heat stored to keep the inside of the car warm when engine is switched off. RTFM!

Is that it?

I'd suggest that you need buttons 6 & 8 to be on to clear the windows. If it's struggling in auto then switch auto off and set the air direction and fan speed manually.

I don't know the ML setup, but the centre rear vents on the C Class are linked to the front face level vents - so the air has to be directed to them (manually, if the auto system decides it's not necessary).

There doesn't appear to be any difference in the rear capability between the two different levels of system. As pointed out above, REST uses residual engine heat to keep the car warm for a bit after the engine has stopped.

M-Class misting up rear windows

Hi Gary

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have just bought a 2007 m-class and have exactly the same problem.

How did you get it resolved?
