From the last time I posted about my oil leak, I have now set about taking the engine out and doing the work myself(dumb, ignorant or both?) While I have the engine out, I want to fit the aircon unit from the doner car. The question I have is, where does the Pump go? The 230, has space on the left had side of the engine and a jocky wheel at the bottom. I can see neither space nor bolt holes for this. The Brooklands manual doesn not show any views of the engine with aircon fitted. And secondly, is it possible to buy reconditioned engines complete. Other than the engine out business the car is nearly ready for show, I only have the two 123's now and both are looking quite good. I stall cant get pictures on here though. Regards

I fitted aircon from a donor car once, don't ask the manufacturer, it is embarrassing

I had to fit a bracket to the side of the engine block which in turn the pump is bolted to. Additionally, I had to change the pulley on the crankshaft from 2 groove to 3 groove. This was to accomodate the extra belt for the aircon.

I can't imagine you need to change the pulley as MB uses big poly-v belts, but you will need some sort of bracket to bolt onto the block.

Cheers,

Richard

Richard, thanks for the info. Do you know if any of the UK W123's came with air con as standard? I know they did in SA, that is where the 230 was improted from. If so, I will hunt around at the breakers for the correct bracket.
Malcom, thanks for the address, I am going to have a look now, just in case it is easier to get a recon.
Regards

Russel,

Highly unlikely I would have thought, at the time of the W123, most people in the UK hadn't heard of aircon. Strictly the preserve of top of the range kit.

I enjoyed using a donor car, just cut loads of holes, welded up some old holes and then just swapped bits from car to car. Took one weekend for everything inside the car and another for everything under the bonnet.

I must have been mad, it was my only car and I needed it for work each Monday !

Best of luck,

Richard

Malcom, thanks for the Crewe Engines recomendation. I called today and unfortunatly at £1295.00 for a rebuilt unit, with trade in, it is definitly out of the question. But it was worth a try.
