One of my good friends is a heating and air con engineer for P&O cruise ships and was trained in the army and has done civvy stuff on land too. I asked him about the best way to maintain an air con system on a car. eg should it be run all the time etc?

He said just to run it "20 minutes a week at least to keep the seals fresh". So if you don't use your air con all the time then run it at least 20 mins a week even in Winter.

Have I spelt seal correctly? Dough.

I use mine all year round. Cool in summer, and clear windows in winter. Not bothered about the extra fuel consumption really.

Most people think that by leaving it on all the year round helps, it does not unless you turn the control to the Cold max, or min temperture, its only then that the compressor will start to run. It has to be set below the ambiant air temp.
Another good way to preserve your condenser is to turn off the air con 2 miles before the end of your journey that way it dries out and does not sit rotting slowly, you have all seen the puddle under the car in summer.

the puddle under the car comes from the evaporator, inside the car, quite a good tip though, I would say continuous a/c use is the best solution, climate control as found on most mercs does the job for you. ( just think how long a fridge or freezer can last, i have one that is twenty years old)
