Hi,

Its time to change the air filter element on my 300CE-24. Options are:

K+N £67
Merc £37
German and Swedish £18

Can anyone recommend which is the best option? Is the K+N really worth the money? Is it suitable??

Thanks

I have been using K&N filters in my cars for the past 25 years (yes twenty five years!) - blimey! never worked it out before. Every car that I have had has been fitted with K&Ns at the first service. There are several reasons:
1) The filtration is supposed to be better than paper element filters.
2) The filtration performance is better after 50,000 miles on a K&N than with a new paper element.
3) The filters are usable over extended periods. My 500E filters (x2) have been used for 120,000+mls and cleaned once. Paper elements would have to be changed every 12,000-18,000 miles i.e. 8 or 9 new paper filters. PS I still have the two K&Ns I originally bought in 1980 for my rally Imp to protect the rear engine from ingesting dust, which is known in Imp rallying circles as an instant rebore
4) Air flow rates (read performance potential) is higher with the K&Ns than paper. Cheap paper filters are the worst.
5) Williams F1 and several other F1 teams have used K&N in preference to any other type/make of filter for many years. Whats good enough for my namesake is good enough for me - its a clan thing.
6) They are tolerant of water. Water and c**p thrown up from the Imp's rear wheels and the water and mud ingested into the engine bay of my Range Rover would have destroyed any paper filter, which would have disintegrated and been sucked into the engines.
7) Generally, I can forget the airfilter at any service except for the 60,000 service thus saving time (money, if you get someone else to do it)

Enough good reasons?

500E 2x panel filters
E320CDI 1x panel filter
Aprilia RST1000 1x drum filter, oil filter
Alfa GTV6 1x panel filter
RangeRover Turbo Intercooler Toyota engine 1x bolt on filter
Clan Crusader 2x clamp on specials

All the above are current.

KN do not make one for the 3.2 liter V6 from 06 98. I would have liked one but there we are.

I use Mann air filters (from GSF) in my E300D. German and exactly the same as the Merc ones.

Malcolm,

The K&N filter you require is # 33-2747 for the 1998 E320 3.2L V6 fuel injection.

I bought a K&N for the IL6 3.2 Diesel, which should have been slightly more difficult to source but once I had the part number the shop, Motorworld of Hinckley, Leics had no problem in obtaining one in two days.

Check out the web site www.knfilters.com for dealers, they require country and post code. I use the international site as its easier than the GB site.

PS Mark, I think your part No. is E9179. It looks like a complex filter. Check out the site above for the filter and dealer but £67 sounds a bit high. It might be worth shopping around. I found internet sites much more expensive than the local high street dealer.

PPS - K&N Filters

One last piece of advertising. K&N are always on the look out for vehicles that they do not have on the books and are willing to make up replacement filters to special order. I had one made for the GTV6 at a price that was comparable to the rest of the range i.e. at no extra premium.

Thank you for that. The price is fine as MB want £45 for a paper one, well two as they are twined.

Clive,
How do you fine the performance of the 3.2CDi engine with the K&N filter fitted. I'd like to fit one as I've used them before but am a bit concerned about the MAF reaction to it. I assume everything is working OK, if so can you supply the K&N part No. for a 2000 CDi, I would imagine its the same as yours.

Thanks

Malcolm,

I've not found any great change in performance due solely to the air filter, mainly as I changed it as is my policy at the first opportunity and at the same time as I fitted a PSI Smartbox. Greater power from the smart box required more air through the filter. There has been no reaction by the MAF. The original paper filter looked fairly serviceable and I would not expect an enormous resistance through it which might have called for a service. As far as the engine sees it's breathing nice and freely.

Can't find your car/filter on the web site so I'm going to need more info. Or, you can check it out yourself on the above link that I gave Television.

Thanks Clive,
After checking the K&N website I found a part no. I'll fit one at the next service.

Hmm.....well if you're not in sales then it must either be marketing or consultancy.

Am I right?
