AFter trolling through the 5 million entries about idle speeds and dodgy idle I'm abou tto start having a go meself.

Is it me, or is the air filter base a total t**t to remove? undid everything; but it seems completely glued onto the air intake thingy. It feels like something is going to break.

Anybody done this? I know you must have, but how difficult was it?

Which car do you have - a 190 has three bolts - two on top one at the right side by the throttle linkage. The fittting around the throttle intake is tight.

Soz; its the 300. three bolts also on this, the problem is the rubber ring seal thing around the throttle body.

Anyway, I cleaned a load of crap out just by getting a cloth in there with me finger + idles much smoother + starts easier when cold now.

I did this wihtout taking the air filter off btw.

Only reason to do that would be to take the whole throttle body intake with the flap inside thing off and thats not something I'd undertake lightly.
