I have a 1997 W210 E300TD I had trouble starting in the morning and especially when parked slightly uphill when the front is above the rear.

I have noticed air in the clear pipes. I have changed all of the clear pipes and the O rings with it, and have replaced the two pipes leading from the fuel tank. The clips were also replaced. I have also replaced the glow plugs.

But there are still air bubbles in the pipe, resulting in the same problem when starting first thing in the morning.

Does anyone know if they think that I am having problems with the fuel pump? Or fuel filter (as I have not replaced this as it has been replaced recently)?

If anyone could help, your comments would be very much apprciated, thank you.

Its important to check the return pipe to tank, all pipes should have clamps.

Remove the fuel filter and check the o-rings are in good order (best to warm the engine up first, makes it easier to re-start once the filter is back on).

air in fuel pipe, leaking fuel pump.

I have replaced the fuel and pre fuel filter and the o ring for it and have clamped the return pipe at both ends. When i turn the engine off, the clear pipe going to the pre filter fills with air instantly up to 3/4 of the length. Is this normal?
I have also noticed that the first metal pipe (front) on the pump is leaking at the base. would this be causing problem? I have read that there is an o ring there which might need replacing does anyone have any tips to do it.

THank you and merry xmas to all.

if your pump is leaking, then yes this will let air in, without know where the leak is coming from it is too hard to give advice, If it is a pipe going in or out, how are these pipes joined, with a union ? or is there a tube coming out of the pump and the pipe clamps to it. There is no specific info as it comes under standard workshop practice, with some more details maybe I can offer further assistance.

Hello Malcolm, the pipe from the pump is metal and fixed with a 13mm nut, below is spine nut and then a steel plate and it seems to leak around the steel plate and the base which is the pump body.

the return pipe to tank wont cause air in the feed pipe...............
I did not say that it would. MB say fit clamps to all pipes including the return,
the return system is an important part on a modern car. Air in the system normally finds its way to the highest component. The original complaint was air in system.

OK so the fuel is leaking from either the 13mm nut on pipe, or the base of pump, If you dry off with a cloth and watch you should see which one it is.
If its the pipe, the chances are that the olive on the pipe has been over tightened, or if the pipe was ever bent near the olive,it would mean cutting the end of the pipe off and fitting a new olive, thats if the pipe was long enough, otherwise make up a new pipe.
If it is the base of the pump, there is no service info on this part.
You could take the pump off and clean it well and dismantle. O rings are freely available in all sizes. Many so called non service parts can be repaired.
Don't try and do it on the car, one speck of dirt and you are back to square one.
