My SLK (98) has been plugged in and has shown an air intake flap error which I beleive is the flap in the airbox that goes back to the supercharger? does anyone know how this works as when you switch the ignition on you can hear motors drive but I took the pipe off and the flap doesn't move I then started the car and reved it to approx 3000rpm it still didn't move but I did get Mig jet comming in to land from the suppercharger pipe and thought it best not to rev any harder. I need to know when the flap should shut and if I take it appart are a million and one parts going to fly out never to go back again?

Sorry I've posted this in two places because I wasn't sure of the best one.
Thanks Jako

I'm not the best for Technical advice, but the Air Mass Sensor (if that's the same thing) went on my '97 SLK.

It cost around £200 to replace at main dealer.

May not be same thing.

recirc air flap

Hi

No air mass meter isn't same thing, I think you are talking about the recirculated air flap this is used to control the boost pressure on the smaller engines with super chargers (kompressors) I would guess your fault code is p2036 secondary air injection fault, there are several issues surronding this fault code and the recirc air flap is one of them. It is very difficult to diagnose correctly and is generally taken in several steps (cheap parts first). Its almost impossible to observe the flap and say yes its faulty but there are some internal resistance tests that you can do the trouble is these faults seem to be intermitant and you need to reprogram the air flap if the batt goes flat for this you need a star machine

It sounds as though you are referring to the air changeover valve which is mounted on the air filter outlet. I had the same fault reported on my CLK 230K (1999) when the engine lost a lot of power. The valve was replaced but with no improvement. The valve changes over when the kompressor clutch cuts in. The fault was eventually traced to a lack of signal to the kompressor clutch.
Under the plastic cover at the front of the engine is a 2-pin connector, one pin supplies a positive to the c/o flap to activate it and the other pin sends an earth to the kompressor clutch to cut the komp in. The earth comes from the ECU.
Now for the bad news, in my case it needed a new ECU to solve the problem.
This was not an MB Dealer rip-off, the diagnosis was done by Andy Gale himself who demonstrated the lack of signal to me and who has a good reputation on this forum. The Star test seemed only to detect the failure of the air valve to changeover becuase the komp clutch had not engaged and did not seem to monitor the signal to the komp. If any of our more technical members can expand on this I would love to learn more.
