Hi,

I am trying to understand my A160 a bit better, and one of the issues I am trying to get up to speed on is the Air Pump Control Valve.

Here is one shot of it taken end on to the cylinder head from over the gearbox end:

Here is a shot of it again, taken from slightly above; I have disconnected it from the head and you can see that it connects to the exhaust port in the head - see the 'black hole'.

There is a small vacuum hose that connects to the inlet plenium (perhaps this controls the valve?) and then there is a larger black hose going in (see first photo). I am told that this is to get fresh air into the exhaust train so as to better allow burning of hydro carbons in the catylitic converter.... There is also a sensor connection that goes to the ECU.

This air pump control valve is not normal on an Aussie car and this photo is of a 2nd hand engine bought from Japan - I am not sure if UK engines have this.

Can anyone shed some light one how this works? As my ECU does not have a connector for this I have disconnected the vacuum to the plenium and have taped up the 2 hoses on the shutoff valve.
