Posting this here as it is not Merc based, but hoping that some of the knowledgeable people on here may be able to help.
Last week the passenger airbag on my mate's missus's Polo went off as she was driving. The shock caused her to lose control and and hit the kerb (on the nearside) damaging the alloy and some suspension components. The car went into limp mode.
Obviously everyone has asked did it REALLY go off before she hit the kerb, and she swears blind it did.
The car is only a year two old. The bloke at the dealership has said that the OBD shows a 'lateral deceleration' (hitting the kerb) and this is what triggered the airbag.
My question is simple; am I right in assuming that the OBD records all events AND THEY ARE TIMECODED?
An 'independent' assessor is coming out from Germany to inspect it, but so for both the dealer and VW are having nothing to do with it.
I would also add that the seatbelt pretensioner(s) didn't fire e, and when the car was new it suffered water ingress into the passenger footwell, where I believe the airbag brain lives.
Anyway, if all these events are timecoded, this should prove it one way or another. The only fly in the oitment may be that she called the AA and the AA bloke started pulling fuses, could this have wiped anything?
Quite luckily for my mate she had only just dropped him off (at the pub).
Incidentally, she has good airbags herself!
