Airbag recall concern W204

I have owned from new a 2007 C-class C220cdi Sport, and recently visited local MB dealer for replacement airbags to be fitted as part of the general recall.

The steering wheel on this particular model is a 3-spoke wheel, with the ‘spokes’ at 9o’clock, 3o’clock and 6o’clock.

Before the airbags were replaced, I could operate the horn by depressing any of the 3 spokes.

After the airbags were replaced, the horn could only be operated by depressing the 9o’clock spoke and the 3o’clock spoke.

The 6o’clock spoke will not depress now, and the horn will not sound by depressing this spoke.

When I complained to the dealer, they were extremely rude and the technician was arrogant enough to suggest that the horn was working correctly and that there must have been a fault on the operation of the horn from new.

Can any other C220cdi Sport owner confirm that the horn should operate by depressing any of the 3 spokes please?

I cant believe it was designed to work on only 2 of the 3 spokes.
I would have elevated to to the service manager, then the general manager if not resolved. Still no joy MBUK is your next step.

Sounds like absolute BS from the technician. Try another one and see if that works correctly

Thanks guys - the service manager had a private conversation with the technician, and then was very rude and dismissive about my complaints. He was worse than the technician! Contacted MB head office, and raised a complaint. Unbelievably, they called me 5 days later and said that after speaking to the dealer they were happy that the work was carried out satisfactorily and were closing the complaint.

My main concern is that the new airbag has not been fitted properly, and the wires and plugs within the airbag unit are actually fouling the horn mechanism.

I really don’t know where to go from here.

Go to another dealer local to you if possible, tell them your issue - horn acting odd (without complaining about the previous dealer), ask them to have a look and fix, if they report a fault, fix and charge you send the bill to the first dealer with a nice letter and a copy to MBUK.

MBUK are very much on the side of the MB Franchise almost always.

Only problem is the ~£200 diagnostic fee :(

Dont rule out that fitting the new bag could require an adaptation to the horn.
