Aircon Air flow direction (or lack of)

have a W210 2001 E320 CDI avantgarde. Have a problem with the direction of the airflow which is stuck on the windscreen and middle vents, regardless of where you turn the knob. Any ideas, does it sound expensive (groan !!)

All and any help appreciated in the usual way.....

Sorry, but your first move is to have a fault code readout.

The car is in with MB for some accident repair and they are going to read the fault codes/delete old ones and let me know the problem(s).

Will advise the outcome as keen to give it a go myself if it straight forward'ish

It maybe something as simple as a leaking vacuum hose as the vents should be operated in this manner.

Belated Update

For those of you that are interested in the solution.

This morning had a mobile phone engineer fitting hands free kit. I raised the question of my aircon problem with him and he had a quick look. Appears someone at some stage has removed the control panel and not put it back together because the two "legs" that are on the other side of the air flow direction dial were not in their female house and just waggling about connected to nothing.

After 10 minutes of fiddly attachment he got them in (can only go one way due to the grooves on the legs).

Result is perfectly working aircon airflow direction.

Another niggle of the list and all for the price of a drink.
