Hi all,

A friend recently removed the airfilter (briefly!) from my '84 500SEC to demonstrate the engine sound without it. I was literally blown away! He suggested replacing it with a sports/ high performance air filter.

What impact (besides engine sound) will this have? Will it increase fuel consumption?

Can anybody suggest such a filter and where to get it.

(Is it something like this that I'm after? http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=E-2872)

Thanks in advance,

Les

A K & N filter will improve the fuel consumption slightly.

Ok guys this is the nearest to the filter that my 12 year old son bought for my birthday. Would it be ok to fit to my car?

Mine comes with a set of adaptor rings too.
If it will work, do you just attach it to the rubber pipe leading to the present air filter box? ( His face dropped when I told him I may not be able to put it on:) )

To fit that one you take the air box off the car and fit it directly to the intake where the old box went, they are £70 from KN, so be kind to your little lad and buy a car that it will fit it, if you cant get it on yours. it will sound very sporty.

Performance

I fitted one of those to a 190e - it did give quite a considerable performance gain at higher revs BUT BUT BUT only if it were drawing cold air.

At times in traffic, etc when drawing hot it performance was a little "gluggy". I acctually made up a custom instake to draw cold air. I cant comment on your car because im unfamiliar with the enigine - this is my 2 cents.

Time to upset your son, I think...

The K&N that directly replaces the standard filter is a much better bet, you'll get no increase in noise but a healthy gain in power.

Plus all the other benifits of the K&N construction.

You could always bolt the other K&N under the bonnet somewhere convincing, just for effect
