I have a C280 which has an alarm problem. When the car is locked it recently started to flash the lights on the rear view mirror and door many more times than usual and rather than one light both green and red were illuminated together on the door. When the car was restarted after unlocking the door the alarm was activated. I have had a new battery several months ago and had it checked for holding charge and for charging and it is OK. Can anyone offer any help as to what is wrong and how to avoid the alarm going off? Thanks

is the alarm actually going off?
The 2 lights indicate a fault, so for example it does that if one of the doors isn't properly closed. It also does this when the battery in the remote is past it's best. It also does this randomly for not discernable reason :)
In all cases, when mine did it, the doors stayed locked and the alarm armed so, after checking everything was closed and locked, I left it to it. It settles down after a minute or so.

The alarm does not go off every time but most times. I have tried new batteries in the remote to no avail. The locks do work all the time both to lock and unlock. Thanks for your reply

The car is N reg (1996)

Without the year of the car, all I can tell you I had a problem like that I checked the Scorpion module and couldn't find the fault until I inadvertently check the siren, it rusted when I tried to replace the triple batteries inside. I replaced the siren and the problem gone.

The other thing you need to do is to check the chrome ring around the ignition barrel and syncronise the keys with the system. It in the owner manual and Malcolm posted it somewhere. Malcolm, did you post it in the DIY section so it easy to find or buried in the website?

Its tricky. Mine had the MB remote locking with the red and green lights but it didn't have an alarm as standard - as many at the time didn't. The alarm was fitted by the dealer at my request and hooked into the locking system so it may vary a bit depending on which setup you have.
I can't see where Dragon is going so ignore that but the bottom line is that with the 2 lights flashing, the system has detected a problem somewhere which it's trying to warn you about, which is presumably why the alarm goes off.
If it's an MB alarm (not sure how you find this out as it's hidden and all the visible stuff - remote, lights etc are the same ) then I'd imagine that if the alarm has an issue it could flash the lights. So I guess check the normal stuff, interior sensors etc
If just the remote central locking is factory fit then it must be a locking issue - things like the door pin switch etc so it thinks a door is open.
Lets throw this open ...
Anyone know if you can disable the official MB alarm, where it is located and whether there is any way to interrogate it?

My problem is, and thats why I do not answer many of these post is that there are around 5 different systems. Its impossible to know what is fitted without the part numbers of that alarm

ahhh.
Ok - sounds like you need to have it looked at by an indie, if just to find out what you have. I'd ring up first and ask if they have any experience with Circa 1996 MB alarm and remote locking systems. I doubt the dealer will as the engineers from 1996 will have long gone.
Sorry I can't be of more help, except to say, make sure all the lights, including the boot go out when its locked (normal alarm checks really).... and maybe locate and disconnect the bonnet tamper switch as that could cause these symptoms.

Thanks to everyone but I have got to the bottom of the problem - batteries in the key fob. Although I said that I had changed them one of them had a problem and had a low charge, so I bought two completely new ones and, hey presto, the alarm lights worked properly and the alarm didn't go off.

So thanks to everyone who suggested things
