Hi guys!

I recently replaced my E230 Estate with an E55 Estate - and love it to pieces!

However, I have a problem with the E230 (1997 estate)!

Over Xmas in the cold the battery started to get a little flat. So, I removed it and charged it back up.

However, when I removed it the alarm was going off (as to be expected I guess). It ran out after a few hours and I thought nothing more of it.

But, when I attached the battery again the next day I noticed that when I 'zap' the car with the remote it central locks ok but there is no bleep from the alarm and the indicators do not flash to indicate it is armed.

Do I need to reset something after reinstalling the battery???

I have also noticed two other things since - but maybe they are coincedence? Firstly, when I switch the lights on the yellow lights indicator within the dash does not light up. But when I flick on full beam the blue one appears - and so does the yellow one. But the yellow one does not appear when the lights are simply 'on' in standard beam. Is this normal??

Secondly, the tempurature guage part of the dash is no longer lit. I assume a bulb has gone. Could be coincidence though!

Help! Have a broken the alarm?????

Any help with this is very, very much appreciated!!!!!!!

Help me please!

Oh dear, I just read your other thread about the fan problem. Poor you, the plot seems to be thickening.

I hope you didn't jump start the car when your battery went flat. If so, can you recall the exact sequence of events, because maybe that has caused an ECU issue. IIRC, electrical surges can have dramatic effects on a modern car's computers.

Try disconnecting the battery for a while, and then reconnect it when fully charged. Hopefully, this will reset the alarm at least. Check all your fuses to see if you've 'flashed' anything else.

BTW, did your fan pack up at the same time as this lot?

Alarm

No, the car was not jump started at all. The battery was running low (very slow central locking etc) so I whipped it out and charged it up.

It's got a lot of charge now because everything is working as it should (fast central locking etc).

The fan went before the battery charge.

It's so frustrating. I paid £7,000 for this car two years ago, and I've probably spent a total of £1,000 on it since then (we run under 10k miles per year). When I sell it I'll be lucky to get £4,000 for it now - that's a £4,000 loss in two years, or £2,000 per year - or £5.48 loss every day I've kept it - plus insurance and tax of course.

And now to set my couple of problems right will either cost an arm and a leg (£600 for a new fan!) or I have to get it done cheaply (my only option).

However, depsite the moaning I've just replaced it with an E55 so I guess the experience can't be all bad :D

About the alarm - I have tried disconnecting and connecting again, but this did not work. I've checked the fuses next to the battery. I'll have a look at the others today. I know there's some under the bonnet, and another set in the side of the dashboard.

Fingers crossed!

Hi there

Are you asking for the VIN number for the car? Or is it an in-joke :p

Don't know if this could apply to you, but it sounds similar. I had an Astra Coupe, and something very like your problem happened to me. The alarm on mine had two Ni-Mh batteries built into it, which are constantly charging through the cars electrics, in case some tea leaf tries disconnecting the main battery. If the voltage on those drops below a pre-determined value, it assumes something dodgy's going on and sets itself off. I had to let them charge up for a while before I could arm the alarm. Hope this helps.

Hi Guys

Hi guys

The VIN number, taken from the plate on the radiator under the bonnet, is as follows:

210237 20

This is the only number on there that begins 210.

As for the battery idea - does anyone here know if the Mercedes alarm has rechargable batteries in it??

I thought it would be a rechargable battery pack of some kind and I expected it to recharge from the alternator after a few hours, or a day or two. But it never did.

Lights

Also...

"when I switch the lights on the yellow lights indicator within the dash does not light up. But when I flick on full beam the blue one appears - and so does the yellow one. But the yellow one does not appear when the lights are simply 'on' in standard beam. Is this normal??"

[from my previous post within this thread]

Anyone know?

Is the yellow light you are talking about at the far right of the instrument panel ?, if so it is indicating that you have a faulty bulb, a main beam filament not working.
Check if you have main beam on both lights, it is not always obvious as both filaments stay on together when on main beam.
