There was a way of bypassing these ..this was a very common fault on the 202, my memory tells me there was a white wire under the passenger carpet that could be disconnected.. anyone know more about this.. sorry for being less than positive on this but I will try and check...

The red and green LED's are to indicate the fob batteries are flat.

It is important to note that there are 2 different ways that the Red and Green LED’s flash in the mirror and drivers door handle. Whatever way the flash in the mirror, the also flash in the driver’s door handle in the same fashion.

1. In the attached picture, the Red and Green LED’s flash on/off, together, this was the way the flashed recently when my keyfob battery was dying (not completely dead, but dying) so I thought I would record the event. The flashing would continue for about 30 seconds when I locked or unlocked the car via the keyfob, (otherwise car would start normally). Replacing keyfob battery stopped the flashing.

2. The other way that the LED’s can flash, is alternately, and very rapidly, that is Red - Green, Red - Green, Red - Green, but only when the ignition is turned on to position 2, as I understand it, this indicates that the immobilizer has not disengaged when the keyfob button was pressed and so the car wont start. So if the centeral locking is working normally then I think the problem must be with the immobilizer or perhaps the ignition electronics.

I don’t know how to bypass the immobilizer, I know that it can be done as has been mentioned above. If any one knows the exact procedure for my car please let me know, this is a fairly common problem, knowing the solution in advance would be very useful in case I ever encounter this problem on my car.

I’m referring to my own car, a C180 W202 1994. With LED’s in mirror and drivers door handle. Other cars may differ.

Could the original poster say in which fashion are the LED’s flashing?

The fob batteries can still be flat "even" if the Central Locking still works.
I know this for a fact as it has happened on my C230K 1997 "P" plate, a few times.
You can bypass the immobiliser by shorting out 2 of the cables going to the alarm ECU which is fitted in the passenger side footwell. When this happened to mine I got the cable colours from the main dealer and also the AA when I called them out on a breakedown.

Thanks for the correction Andy regarding the central locking, I’m not in the AA and my dealer wouldn’t give you the time of day unless your car is less than 3 years old.

I will put up a picture of my alarm ECU when I get a chance maybe you might be able to give me a clue regarding wire colour and the rest I will work out with a bit of luck.
