I have a 1997 210 Eclass here in Russia & to my great displeasure it was badly scratched dispite being in a secure parking area. I thought the alarm would have sounded but the guard said he heard & seen nothing. Anyway later today I tried testing the alarm to see how sensitive it would be & nothing happened. The car has the electronic 3 button key & on locking the car I assumed this activated the imobiliser & alarm. The hazard lights flash when I lock the car & there is a red LED flashes on the radio. I have phoned a local alarm company & he says this model only has an imobiliser & alarm only sounds when a door is forced open. Can anyone confirm what the alarm company are telling me or should the alarm activate by rocking the car tapping on a window. Any help would be appreceated as the owners hand book is in German.

Thanks for the information Malcolm, the guy in the local alarm shop was right then. He also said an alarm with the pendulum sensor could be fitted to the car, but would not be activated by the car key. It would need another remote to operate it.
Taking the car to a body shop tomorrow & hopefully the scratches may machine polish out.

Malcolm. Locking the car with the keyfob , all four indicators flash 3 times. I have tried locking a friend inside the car, waited 2mins & he moves around, opens the door & nothing happens. I also cannot see any movement sensor inside the car.Is it possable my car only has an imobiliser or were all 210s fitted with movement sensors.

There is always some means to switch a car alarm off, either by a key switch or perhaps via the key fob, is it possible the alarm was off when you tested it?

Dec, My key is the 3 button electronic type & by pressing the lock button & the indicators flashing 3 times I was assuming that would mean the alarm was armed. On unlocking the car the indicators flash I think once & I assume this would be the indication it was un-armed. I dont know of any other switch to switch off the alarm.

I don’t have knowledge of your model, just putting an idea in your mind as the alarm should have sounded when the door was opened.

If the means to turn off your alarm is via a key switch then you should be in possession of a key, possibly a small round type key.

A key switch can sometimes be on the alarm siren, hidden under a rubber seal or in the glove box or under steering wheel above driver’s knees but usually somewhere it can be easily found. I’m not saying this is the method to disable your alarm but something is not right if the alarm wasn’t triggered when the door was opened.
